A four year letterwinner at BG, Doug Smith was a tri-captain on the 1977 team, earning All-MAC second team honors as an offensive guard. After graduation, he signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Rams. He would play 14 seasons with the Rams, earning six straight Pro Bowl selections from 1984-89, while blocking for NFL Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson. Another Hall of Famer, Jackie Slater, played alongside Smith for much of his career, and mentioned the Falcon alum in his acceptance speech in Canton.

"And then, of course, Doug Smith, a man that I played with the longest - 14 years at the Rams from Bowling Green," Slater said. "Doug Smith was a man who always encouraged us to do the best we could, and always pointed us in the direction of Jesus Christ and I really appreciate Doug Smith."

Smith was inducted into the BG Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.
