One of the first great athletes at Bowling Green, Gus Skibbie was a catcher on the 1921 baseball team, the first team in school history to win a conference championship. He also scored the first touchdown in the football program's history in 1920, and captained the 1921 team that won the Northwest Ohio Conference championship. He earned a total of 14 varsity letters by the time he graduated in 1926.

Skibbie remained in the Bowling Green area after college, teaching and coaching at Bowling Green High School. He was inducted to the BG Athletic Hall of Fame as part of it's inaugural class in 1964. He received the BGSU Alumni Community Award in 1974. Skibbie passed away in June 1985.
